While low interest rates have battered Jamaican banks’ bottom lines, National Commercial Bank has expanded its customer base, enticing new clients with new technologies and greater services. With the number of loans and customer deposits rising, it has taken market share from other banks, landing it LatinFinance’s Bank of the Year Jamaica award for 2015. Because interest rates on government securities are down, National Commercial’s investment banking business has shown a decline in profits. Still, the bank, Jamaica’s largest, increased its operating income by 11% in the year to June. The increase was largely thanks to the sale of debt securities and fees obtained from payment services
