Oil and gas is a messy business. Try as they might, major companies in the sector are bound to flub up somewhere. While firms operating in Latin America are certainly not immune to spills, explosions and other accidents – there showing a marked move toward greater transparency in a sector that has long been plagued by scandals. Pressured by international investors and the public, oil companies in Latin America have drilled deep into sustainability and ethics. Brazil's Petrobras and Mexico's Pemex, in particular, enjoy a sizable proportion of foreign investors and adhere to US and international guidelines. Even Chile's state-controlled Enap put out its first sustainability report in 2005
