When and why did Banco Mercantil begin collecting art?
The collection began at the same time as Banco Mercantil, 80 years ago. Initially it comprised works by artists from the [Venezuelan] Circle of Fine Arts and the early 20th century landscape painters of the Caracas School. A few select works of painters such as Manuel Cabré, Pedro Ángel González, Armando Reverón and Rafael Monasterios were hung in the bank's offices and a collection was begun.
