Peru's Toledo Appoints New Comptroller
Genaro Matute has been named the new comptroller of Peru. Matute is a friend and former business school colleague of President Alejandro Toledo. Matute will be responsible for keeping the state's financial books and monitoring public spending.
A congressional committee narrowly approved Matute to the seven-year post, by a vote of 13 to 11. Opponents say he lacks a university degree and experience, which Matute denies, and was nominated because of his relationship with the president. But supporters say Matute, who is dean of the Superior School for Business Administration in Peru, where Toledo used to teach, met the legal and professional criteria
