Caribbean telecommunications company Digicel said it plans to close shop in Panama after Cable & Wireless Panamá (CWP), a subsidiary of US-based telco Liberty Latin America, got the go-ahead to buy the local unit of mobile phone carrier Claro. The Panamanian government owns 49% of the CWP-Claro tie-up, "which effectively spells the end of competition in the telecoms market for smaller players," Digicel said in a press release on Wednesday.
