Brazil blocks WhatsApp payment service

Brazilian credit and debit card operator Cielo said on Wednesday the Central Bank and anti-trust agency CADE suspended the payment function on the social messaging platform WhatsApp to allow them to evaluate its impact on the local payments sector. Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, launched the payment servicelast week in partnership with Banco do Brasil, Sicredi, Cielo, Visa, Mastercard and Nubank. Brazil is the first country where Facebook is seeking to make the payment function widely available.
