Subtel starts the process to build a digital connection between South America and Asia
Chile's telecommunications regulator Subtel said it will carry out a market consultation on a proposed undersea communications cable between South America and Asia.
Subtel will use the results of the consultation as the basis for future tenders for economic feasibility studies along with technical and legal studies.
South America does not have a direct digital connection to Asia. It uses undersea cables that go to the United States, while another cable to Europe is under construction, Subtel said in a statement.
President Sebastián Piñera announced the initiative in June last year.
