WHEN Marcos Galperín started MercadoLibre in 1999, his goal was to democratize commerce in Latin America so small sellers could compete with big retailers. It’s caught on. More than 10 million vendors sell to over 33.7 million buyers on the ecommerce site. So large has it become that the likes of Walmart have set up shop on the site, bolstering net revenue for MercadoLibre to $1.4 billion in 2017, up 66% on the year.
