Trading in EM CDS was $658bn in Q2, a 35% increase over the $487bn traded in Q1, according to EMTA. Volume was up 85% compared to the $355bn in contracts done in Q2 of 2009. “We believe the hedging need caused by Eurozone sovereign risk in April and May, and the subsequent squeeze, have contributed to the increase in CDS trading volumes in the second quarter of 2010,” says Hongtao Jiang, a director of EM strategy at Deutsche Bank.
