In a year that finally saw LatAm loan volumes spike as bankers once again looked to put money to work in the region, HSBC positioned itself well to ride this trend and played a leading role in reopening the market with key transactions.
The rebound in the loan market helped propel the British bank back into a position of prominence on the league tables, putting it in the top three by late September 2011. This marked an interesting turnaround story for a bank that had failed to reach the top 10 during the same period the prior year, according to Dealogic.
The period covered by this year’s awards coincided with a recovery and then a slowdown in the loan markets after European banks retrenched in the face of sovereign debt troubles at home.
