Citi’s ambassador to China continues to bang the drum for LatAm. He is optimistic, especially about Asian investment in the region. by James Crombie

Half a century in banking, Bill Rhodes made his name in LatAm, a region that continues to captivate him. But far from resting on the laurels of a highly distinguished career, Rhodes remains as hands on, relevant and forward looking as ever.

“My whole career – the springboard for it was Latin America,” Rhodes tells LatinFinance. While at college, Rhodes spent the first two summers working on merchant ships going plying the East and West Coasts to get to LatAm. “Latin America’s been in my blood so to speak since then.”

Rhodes is quick to speak out if there is a problem. Months before the subprime bomb went off, the senior vice-chairman at Citigroup wrote an ill-received op-ed warning that trouble was coming. Besides pushing free trade, the 72-year-old is still trying to get the US government to take more of an interest in LatAm.
