Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada is once again president of
Bolivia. He took office in August at the head of a coalition
government, after winning a tight election race. Sánchez
de Lozada, known everywhere in Bolivia as 'Goni,' is a
millionaire businessman who is both a hard-nosed, pro-market
politician and a visionary leader whose policies have helped
reduce poverty significantly over the years. He earned a degree
in philosophy and English literature from the University of
Chicago, and still enjoys the delights of poetry as well as
fine living. A box of Montecristo cigars and a volume of poems
by WB Yeats sit on a table in his office. Sánchez de
Lozada won an international reputation for his forceful and
successful attack on hyperinflation in the 1980s, when he was
