Taking a Local Perspective

Research is becoming more focused on specific industries and domestic markets, a field led by research analysts at European and local firms.

Home Turf: Local analysts proved their prowess.

CSFB wins this year's Research Olympics, our annual ranking of economists and analysts, by a wide margin, pushing JP Morgan into second place. Bear Stearns came in third in a field that was largely dominated by European firms.

Wall Street seems to have retreated rapidly from research, with the exception of JP Morgan and plucky underdog Bear Stearns. Citigroup, the world's biggest financial services firm, ranked seventh, followed by Merrill Lynch. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs limped in with less than 10 points each. In contrast, SCH and Brazil's Itaú made strong gains.

Each year, LatinFinance asks institutional investors, the principal consumers of Wall Street research, to rank the best analysts and economists covering the region (see page 43 for our polling methodology).
