Taking a Local Perspective
Research is becoming more focused on specific industries and domestic markets, a field led by research analysts at European and local firms.
|Home Turf: Local analysts
proved their prowess.
CSFB wins this year's Research Olympics, our annual ranking
of economists and analysts, by a wide margin, pushing JP Morgan
into second place. Bear Stearns came in third in a field that
was largely dominated by European firms.
Wall Street seems to have retreated rapidly from research,
with the exception of JP Morgan and plucky underdog Bear
Stearns. Citigroup, the world's biggest financial services
firm, ranked seventh, followed by Merrill Lynch. Morgan Stanley
and Goldman Sachs limped in with less than 10 points each. In
contrast, SCH and Brazil's Itaú made strong gains.
Each year, LatinFinance asks institutional investors, the
principal consumers of Wall Street research, to rank the best
analysts and economists covering the region (see page 43 for
our polling methodology). In last year's poll, the picture was
more mixed. Wall Street and European firms both did well.
