LatinFinance talks with Evo Morales on the future of Bolivia, his presidential campaign, and his relationship with Hugo Chávez.
LatinFinance's Michael Thomas Derham met with Evo Morales at his regional headquarters in Cochabamba at the end of a day spent energizing his electoral base. Evo (as he is known) decked out in a Che Guevara T-shirt, was in fine form. Some excerpts from the interview:
The biggest issue in this election is the state of Bolivia's natural gas resources. Are you in favor of the complete nationalization of hydrocarbons?
All of them, not just hydrocarbons. Forest, mineral. The new basis of the new economic regime of the country will be the production of natural resources. How can you privatize your natural resources? I remember what Vicente Fox said, when the American Congress wanted to blackmail Mexico on the immigrant issue. What did they say? "We'll legalize the Mexicans illegally in the US, if you privatize Petrolero de Mexico [Pemex]." What did Fox say? "I may...
